Brit Awards 2006

20:26

The Brits first appeared in 1977, with Queen, The Beatles and Cliff Richard all picking up awards, and featured a rare live performance by Simon and Garfunkel.

Over the years the event has gradually evolved to the format we are familiar with today. Nowadays, trophies are awarded to the winners of 14 main categories, decided by the results of voting by around 1000 judges from the Brit Awards Academy.

There are categories for both British and international acts - last year's winners included Dido for the coveted best album for No Angel and for best female, and Kylie Minogue for best international female and best international album for Fever.

There is an additional prize for Outstanding Contribution to the music industry, which in past ceremonies has been awarded to superstar acts and artists such as Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie and The Eurythmics.
